Why not ask her?
Here's what you're listening for:
- Offered management position as a promotion
- Chose management track from the start
Bosses that choose the management track from the get-go have a much different orientation than managers that come up as former quota-carrying sales reps.
Understanding this nuance will help you manage your boss more effectively. A career manager is fairly binary. The results are all the counts. To mange this boss you need to be crisp on your numbers and set expectations accurately. This manager understands and embraces the business of managing people and objectives.
A sales manager promoted from the rank-and-file understands the challenges in the field and works to build motivated teams. This boss wants to see you busting your butt, and will work with you to close deals. This manager may not always like or appreciate the people management part, but accepts that it's part of the job.
There's no right or wrong on these different types. You just need to be cognizant of the differences and perform accordingly.
